Yesterday, in an act of pure spontaneity, I did a mini lesson on simile. Prior, we were learning about word choice in our writing in order to make it more interesting, engaging, and powerful. We discussed $1 words vs $20 words (EX: happy vs ecstatic) when a student threw out a simile. He was trying to give an example of a $20 word but used a simile instead, so shortly after we switched our focus a bit. Once I explained to them what simile is and how to use it in their writing, they began to give me their own examples. They quickly caught on and gave great examples of their own. The last example caught me off guard like a fresh salmon jumping out of a summer’s stream, but was brilliant and absolutely side splitting.
