Part One: The End Begins

Happy Summer Holidays!!!

I’m writing today so we have a place to write your comments about your first impressions of The Endling!

Do NOT worry if you haven’t read the first section, started reading the first section OR even picked up your copy of the book yet! No need to rush. You have until July 9 (or longer if you need it). I know that some kids had started reading right away, so I just wanted to have a comment page ready!

Once you’re done reading…comment away! You may want to check in on other people’s comments too. It’d be great to reply to someone if you have a connected or even opposing thought with!

Look forward to hearing from you!

Until next time,

Danielle

Hello everyone, this is Julia! I finished this section a few days ago and I think the book is really interesting. I would never have thought to write about so many mismatched creatures coming together in one story. I love how Bix met up with Tobble, and they became friends and how they worked together. My favourite part was when Bix said he minded that there was a ‘big furry meal’ on his back (Tobble).

Hi, this is Kevin. I think the first part of the book is amazing because there’s lots of emotions. It was sad, exciting, and interesting. The characters are all cool in their own ways. My favorite character is Tobble because he is really kind. I think Byx is gonna find Tobble for help.

What’s up peoples! Hudson here! Just finished part one of the Endling and my favourite part was the part where Tobble says confidently “let me just say this: You don’t want to see me mad. I am a terrible sight to behold.” LOL! It’s funny because he’s so tiny!

Hi Everyoe! This is Tamara, Hudson’s mom. Well, this book has my mind filled with so many questions. The author has introduced a ton of information in the first part of the book. I found it a little hard to keep track of the different species and their hierarchy in Byx’s world but the main thing I have gathered is that the Dairnes are a rare and special breed. It was unusual that they had survived as long as they did undetected.

After Byx saved Wobble’s life, Wobble said that he was in debt to her three times and must remain with her even if it should cost him his life ( like her eating him for dinner). I am wondering if he wanted to stay with her because 1) he had never met or seen a Dairne before and was fascinated like he was meeting a movie star? 2) he made it up because he was in danger and thought that he was better off with her or 3) it is a true obligation, that he does have to save her life three times to honour the debt. I guess we will find out.

Byx is very curious and this may have just led to saving her life. Interesting foreshadowing by the author. Will she be the endling or are there other Dairnes out there to still be discovered?

I’m also interested to figure out the humans role in this story. It appears that they may not be the dominant species in the story which also lends to bending your imagination in a different direction.
I can’t wait to read Part Two, I am sure that many of my questions will begin come together.
    Happy reading everyone!

Hi, Grayson here! I would say the Endling is off to a great/sad start. the reason I am sad is how all the dairnes were killed by the Murdano soldiers! I don’t think its fair to start the book like that because we never got to know more about Byx family. But, the beginning isn’t completely terrible. I really like Tobble (the Wobbyk). I think Tobble is really cute and adorable and he isn’t as rude to Byx and yet Byx is rude to him after just saving Tobbles life! I just hope that all changes in part 2.Can’t wait for part 2!

    Sincerely, Grayson.

Yes-that’s a very true comment. It was awful what happens to the Dairnes in Byx’s family/community. I think Byx is very hurt and is grieving. She’s lucky to have Tobble around. Happy Reading!!

We started out reading as a family but some of the words were hard to pronounce so it distracted from the story a little bit. I think that it just takes some getting used to like in other fantasy books. Sometimes its easier to read them in your head so that you have your own picture and understanding of what it means. So we read the first three chapters together then decided to read the remaining on our own.
(On that note, I just realized I was calling Tobble, Wobble, I must have been combining Tobble and Wobbyk lol!!!)

Totally agree. The fantasy language was something we talked about in class a bit…doing it as a read aloud would definitely have its challenges. When we all meet up in September I’m sure we’ll have a good laugh about how we are pronounce the words differently!

Hi guys I like the way that this book has started. byx is a great main character! all the violence is so gory but the humour kind of keeps me going. I wonder how the next section will be .

I could do without the violence, but humour definitely helps. It’s easier knowing it’s fantasy and the gory stuff is just made up. Enjoy Part 2…Happy Reading!!
