9 Weeks Left!

Happy Saturday Everyone!

I just realized that there are only 9 weeks of school left!! Wow! That’s seems impossible! Don’t worry though…We still have lots of great learning to do!

Last week at school:

-We celebrated Earth Day…Room 123 style!

Our bulletin board is complete (AND looks amazing!), Friluftsliv Bingo is in full force, the environmental egg hunt was prepared and later executed for 3 classes and we got our 30 days of environmental announcements started! We also got an extra long recess after the dress rehearsal on Monday (Earth Day)!

Room 123 you continue to be an inspiration to others!!!

*Below is a photo to spark an environmental conversation at home…

What are your thoughts about a can of pop being wrapped in plastic in a plastic tray at a grocery store?

-We had 3 Giants in the Sky performances AND were an amazing choir to support the main cast! Congratulations on a job well done 😊

-We had a check in for our common learning groups and will have an opportunity to review the areas that still need some attention before our final assessment next Friday

Looking for ways to help at home?! Try working through simple sentences to create a short paragraph and eliminate or misuse punctuation, capitals and contraction words!

-We did not get any book clubs done unfortunately, but we will get some extra time for them next week

-We finished The One and Only Ivan!!! Try having a conversation at home about our daily read aloud. Ask your child what he/she thought of the book. Ask about the main characters, the problem, the moral of the story, etc. This can help with comprehension which is as we know, so important when we read 😊

-We started to formally practice some division!

-We participated in an Earth Day inspired Friluftsliv where we took our buddies to a community park

-We got Friday off…the kids did at least 😉

Next up!

-Monday is our Vertical Team day to celebrate the great things we do at Montrose and the important beliefs we have by learning more about our new treaty. Students will rotate through 3 stations and then do a whole school activity outside (if the weather cooperates!)

-I promise to get to books clubs! We will possibly finish one book then we will focus on some interactive activities to represent and share our learning!

-We will start a new read aloud book called: Front Desk

-We will continue to work on division and on making the connections to multiplication (and fractions too!)

-On Friday we are back in the forest!! It’s actually our final forest visit of the year. We will go with our vertical team (124&125) again. It’ll be out 5th class visit to Assiniboine Forest this school year!! It’s great to see and hear how our young Montrosians appreciate nature and have embraced Friluftsliv this year.

Kids that love and respect nature become adults that love and respect nature ❤️

Looking forward to another wonderful week at school!

Until next time,

Danielle

Hoppy Easter Every Bunny!!!

Hi Everyone!!

Just a quick post about our busy week last week and our busy upcoming week as well!!

Recap!

-Willow was a great classroom visitor! She inspired us as we wrote, kept us company while we worked and really got us into the spirit of spring!

Turns out taking a photo of a moving bunny isn’t that easy!!

-We are ready to be hooligans for the musical!! The shirts are looking “bad” in a great way 😉

-We are getting close to finishing our first country study during Book Clubs. We have some good ideas to celebrate the culture of these countries…stay tuned!

-Our common learning groups have been going really well. We are about half way through our lessons and can already say we’ve had lots of practice with editing and fractions/decimals!

-We have been practicing a lot of Friluftsliv lately! It’s been so beautiful out and we can’t get enough of being outside! We hope that you’ve been able to get outside after school too!!

-We are ready for Earth Day!! The kids have done a great job thinking of ways to celebrate our environment…not only for one day but for 30! We are calling it Earth Day & Beyond!

This leads into what’s happening next week!!

-Our 30 Day Challenge officially starts on Monday (Earth Day). Each class in the school has been invited to join us in a BINGO type game. There are 25 different challenges to do. There are also some great prizes to win! Room 123 will participate in the challenge, but not for a prize because we will actually be the ones organizing all the prizes anyway! We have 30 days worth of announcements to inspire the students and staff in our school and we will soon have a beautiful bulletin board on display outside of our classroom! Well done everyone!! Let’s make everyday Early Day!

-Monday is also the dress rehearsal for Giants in the Sky! Dress rehearsal starts at 1:00. Our shirts are already at school, but based on where the students cut the holes they may also need to wear another shirt underneath. Please wear or send in the jeans (preferably or the bottoms that you have picked out) that kids are wearing for the musical as well. We will be wearing some sort of makeup for the shows and on Monday we will do a few kids as a trial. If you have any questions or concerns about the makeup (or anything else) please let me know.  If you don’t have tickets for the show(s) yet then be sure to get those ASAP! Reminder: Show times are 10:00, 1:30 and 7:00 🙂

-We will still have time to do common learning times, book clubs and Friluftsliv too!!

-There is no school on Friday!

Enjoy your weekend being outside! I’ve already had coffee and breakfast on the deck, helped build a fence at the farm, explored part of the forest behind my mom’s house and had an egg drop competition…and it’s only 12:30 on Saturday!

Hudson is checking out my egg drop submission for our contest…I tied for second place (along with 4 other members of my family!)

Until Next Time,

Danielle

Spring Has Sprung…Right?!

Hello Everyone!

Please tell me that was the last snow we’ll see until late fall!!! I think we are all ready for sone warm weather and all the new life that this time of year brings 🙂

Well…we’ve been busy over the past few weeks since coming back from the break. Although I’m sure no one is surprised by that!! Here’s what we’ve been up to!!

-We started reading The One and Only Ivan as our next read aloud book. Ask your child what it’s about and their impressions of the book so far. Is anyone reading any good books together at home?!

-We are in our third round of our common learning time with rooms 122&126. Our ELA target is editing/conventions in writing and our math targets are fraction/decimals (and some rote counting for those students who require extra practice). We meet 3 times per cycle and have the students split into four groups. At the end of our cycle we will reassess the students and celebrate their growth!

-We’ve had some more fun with Zen-tangles! Early next week we will share our Zen-tangle eggs with you!

-We have begun our next two inquiries!! One is all about an upcoming Earth Day Challenge and the other is about communities around the world and how we are all interconnected!

-Earth Day…stay tuned for details about what our young environmentalists have planned for our class and fellow Montrosians! We hope it also inspires you at home and the whole school community!!

-We started book clubs this week too! The class has been broken into four groups and are learning about four different countries! As we finish with one book/country we will begin another! These books are already showing us the similarities and differences of our lives here in Winnipeg and the countries represented in the books!

-We are trying REALLY hard to support our Jets! We wear white/team jerseys on game days, we talk strategies and statistics and our final push is to make a school bulletin board complete with our own player drawings! Once we are finished on Monday I’ll send a photograph so you can see the board if you can’t make it to the school to see it in person!

What’s Happening Next Week:

-We will be doing some painting on Monday in preparation for our Earth Day inspired bulletin board that our “bulletin board committee” has designed!

-We will work on List 2 of the ‘third hundred’ Fry words. List 1 from the ‘third hundred’ was our best assessment so far! The first and second hundred words are words that we should already know how to spell so we spent less time practicing them at school. With the third list, the time we spent working at school and then the kids taking the words they felt they needed more practice with home was well spent! I will assess the students during the week of April 22. At the end of the ‘third hundred words’ I will create a list of words each student spelled incorrectly, have them practice at home and school then individually reassess each student.

-We are “destroying”…okay that’s an intense word!!…the shirts you’ve sent in to create “Hooligan costumes”.  IF you have not sent in a shirt please do so ASAP or let me know if you need a shirt so I can find one! We will tackle this project on Wednesday morning. If anyone would like to come in and help let me know!!! Also-if you are concerned about paint getting on clothing, please consider that when your kids get dressed in the morning!!

-On Thursday we are having a special visitor! Willow the bunny is spending the day with us in Room 123. If you have any concerns please let me know!

-Notes about Fun Lunch and the Musical were sent home last week. If you didn’t receive these notes, there is a good chance that your child has left the notes in their mailbox and perhaps your reminders in addition to mine will help them remember to use the mailbox as a tool to be organized with their school to home communication!

-Reminder that there is no school on Friday

Have a great rest of your weekend! Let’s hope that the Jets have better luck in St. Louis!

Until next time,

Danielle
